Update (March 24, 2015):
At the Board meeting on March 23, 2015, the Board voted to terminate the Ad Hoc Annexation Committee and any further research regarding the possible annexation of Whitmore Lake Public Schools by Dexter Community Schools. Additionally, the Board directed the administration to explore opportunities for shared services with neighboring school districts and to transmit a resolution to government officials in Lansing urging adequate and equitable funding for all local school districts and financial incentives to mitigate the financial barriers to annexation.
-------
Update (February 10, 2015):
The Ad Hoc Annexation Committee has adopted a phased approach to researching annexation. They are currently in Phase I of the 4-phase process. The purpose of Phase I is to gather and analyze readily available information, identify "hot button" issues, and to identify preliminary risks and benefits based upon what is currently known. This phase is expected to conclude by the end of February. The committee will then share its findings with the Board of Education and the Board will decide if the committee should continue to the next phase of research.
-------
The Board has appointed an Ad Hoc Committee on Annexation whose role is to research information regarding the implications of annexation, identify known and unknown variables, identify the pros and cons of annexation, and explore other long-term options which may be beneficial to our district and students.
The District is committed to doing the research necessary to understand all of the implications of annexation and will share and seek public input throughout the process. It is anticipated that the timeline for collecting and analyzing information will take a few months. It will likely be spring at the earliest or summer before a decision by the Board would be made.

FAQs
What criteria are being used to evaluate the potential annexation?
Annexation is when one district attaches another district to itself. In this case, the district to be attached (Whitmore Lake) loses its legal entity and becomes a part of the annexing (Dexter) district. This is distinct from consolidation when two or more districts are dissolved and a brand new district created (e.g., Ypsilanti Public Schools and Willow Run Community Schools consolidated to form Ypsilanti Community Schools).
